Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her political activism, acting abilities and gift for rhyme. At 8 years old her cousin from Islam named her Latifah which translates to "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah was a singer in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance singing "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mother was the catalyst. She was always in touch with students and the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, to perform at a school dance.
